The big reveal of watchOS 27 is just a few weeks away, and one rumor suggests it might add a new Apple Watch face inspired by my all-time favorite. Here’s why this rumor is particularly interesting.
Modular Ultra reportedly inspired the new Apple Watch face in watchOS 27 for all users

Apple has many different watch faces available in watchOS, but my favorite is easily the Modular Ultra.
The Modular Ultra is exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra models, despite the latest models in the line having displays of a similar size.
And as I already wrote, I consider the Modular Ultra to be the biggest advantage that the Apple Watch Ultra has over the Series models.
So much so that if the Modular Ultra became available on this year’s Apple Watch Series 12, I would strongly consider switching from my current Ultra 3 model.
Which makes one of the few watchOS 27 reports we have so far particularly interesting. Earlier this month, Mark Gurman wrote on Bloomberg:
For watchOS 27, codenamed Orchid, Apple is testing several new faces. One in particular stands out: the simplistic look at the Modular Ultra design. It has the same large hours as the Ultra dial, but removes the possibility of a large complication in the center, a series of three smaller complications above the time, and information placed around the bezel. The result is a large clock that fills the top two-thirds of the display, below which are a series of three smaller complications. The move appears to be aimed at bringing a version of the Modular Ultra experience to the range’s standard watches
The idea of a “Modular Ultra version of the experience” coming to Apple’s range of models sounds like my wish may come true.
But the details, at least as reported by Gurman’s, don’t really sound much like the Modular Ultra at all.
Making sense of the rumored new watchOS 27 watch face

If this new face really only offers a large clock and three complications at the bottom, I’m not sure how useful it will be. It looks like a potential minor new setup for the classic modular face.
There are plenty of watch faces that already give you a large digital clock and some complications. I don’t know why Apple would need to create a new modular face for this.
But I hope that what Gurman saw is only part of the story. If the new face is indeed aiming to bring the Modular Ultra version to more Watch models, it may offer more flexibility than stated.
I would love to see a full Modular Ultra copy/paste for the series models. Short of that, however, I’m still holding out hope that this new face of watchOS 27 will offer a bit more versatility than what’s been described.
